- The Verdict
Two massive theatrical premieres and a Netflix drop that's about to take over every timeline. The week of June 22 doesn't mess around — here's everything hitting screens and what deserves your time.
Some weeks give you one thing to look forward to. This week gives you a DCU blockbuster, the last ride for the Jackass crew, a live-action Avatar return, and a stack of holdovers still dominating theaters. Let's break it all down.
The Big Three
Supergirl — June 26, Theaters & IMAX
The DCU is officially back in theaters. Craig Gillespie directs Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El in what might be the most tonally ambitious superhero movie of the year. Forget the origin-story template — this one's a revenge story set across the galaxy, with Kara hunting down the person responsible for a tragedy that derails her 23rd birthday trip. Matthias Schoenaerts plays the villain, David Corenswet reprises his Superman role, and Jason Momoa shows up because apparently every DCU movie needs at least one person who could bench-press a planet.
The trailers have been genuinely impressive. Alcock already proved she can carry a screen in House of the Dragon, and Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) isn't exactly a safe studio hire. This feels like DC swinging for the fences rather than playing it safe.
Anticipation: 9/10 — This is the one to watch this week. IMAX if you can.
Jackass 5 — June 26, Theaters
The final ride. Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Wee Man, and the rest of the crew are back for one last round of stunts that will make you laugh, wince, and question the limits of human stupidity — in the best possible way. Jeff Tremaine directs again, Spike Jonze produces, and Paramount is banking on nostalgia plus chaos.
The big talking point: Bam Margera appears only through archive footage after being fired from Jackass Forever. It's a bittersweet note for longtime fans, but the new blood — Poopies, Zach Holmes, Jasper Dolphin, Rachel Wolfson — proved themselves last time. This is a victory lap, and they know it.
Anticipation: 7/10 — You already know if this is for you. If it is, opening night is the only way to see it.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 — June 25, Netflix
Seven episodes drop on June 25, and the hype is enormous. Season 1 was a genuine surprise — Netflix's live-action adaptation actually worked, and now we're getting the Earth Kingdom arc with the introduction of Toph Beifong (played by Miya Cech). Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, and Ian Ousley return as Aang, Katara, and Sokka, and the journey to Ba Sing Se is about to begin.
Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back, which means the production quality should be consistent and the story momentum won't stall. Daniel Dae Kim's Fire Lord Ozai looms larger this season, and if they nail Toph's introduction the way the animated series did, this could be the show's breakout moment.
Anticipation: 8/10 — Clear your Wednesday evening. This is a binge-day-one situation.
Still in Theaters
Last week's releases are still commanding screens, and honestly, the holdover lineup is almost as strong as the new arrivals.
Toy Story 5 is in its second weekend and almost certainly still printing money. Pixar's return to their flagship franchise has been a massive draw — expect it to hold the #1 spot until Supergirl makes its move.
The Death of Robin Hood is the A24 counter-programming pick. Hugh Jackman in a revisionist Robin Hood tale directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig) — it's the kind of movie that plays better in week two when word-of-mouth kicks in.
Girls Like Girls — Hayley Kiyoko's directorial debut continues its run and has been a genuine crowd-pleaser.
Disclosure Day is now in its third week. Spielberg's UFO thriller with Emily Blunt and Josh O'Connor hasn't slowed down, and if you still haven't seen it — fix that.
The Verdict
This is one of those rare weeks where theaters and streaming are both firing on all cylinders. Supergirl is the main event, Avatar S2 is the streaming play, and Jackass 5 is the wildcard that'll outperform expectations because it always does.
My recommendation: Avatar on Wednesday night, Supergirl in IMAX on Thursday or Friday, and if you've got the energy — Jackass 5 with a loud crowd on opening night. You won't regret any of them.
See you next week.
