Mid-Summer Streaming Check-In: What's Still Worth Watching and What Lost Me

We're halfway through summer and your streaming queue is either overflowing or collecting dust. I've been keeping up with everything so you don't have to — here's what survived, what peaked, and what quietly became the best thing on TV.

Okay, it's mid-July and I need to talk about what's happening on streaming right now. Because some of these shows got BETTER since I last checked in, some completely fell off, and one of them might be my show of the summer. Let's do this.

Still Absolutely Crushing It 🔥

The Vampire Lestat (AMC) — 9/10

I said it a month ago and I'll say it louder now: Interview with the Vampire Season 3 — sorry, The Vampire Lestat — is the best show on television right now. Six episodes in and Sam Reid has fully taken ownership of this role. The 1980s rock god arc is everything the books promised and the show is delivering.

The Paris flashbacks hit different this season. The musical sequences are ambitious in a way that could easily fail but somehow don't. If you dropped off after Season 1, come back. This is peak AMC.

Binge-worthiness: Weekly appointment TV. Don't skip it.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 (Netflix) — 8/10

ATLA S2 wrapped and the verdict is in: they nailed it. Toph's casting was perfect. The earthbending sequences are the best action Netflix has produced. The Ba Sing Se arc works. It's still not the animated original, but it doesn't need to be — it's its own thing and it's genuinely great.

If you binged it already: good. If you haven't started: this is your weekend.

Binge-worthiness: 9/10. All seven episodes, one sitting.

Rivals Season 2 (Hulu) — 8/10

I was worried the sophomore slump would hit this one. It didn't. Hayley Atwell joining the cast was inspired — she brings a completely different energy. The 1980s excess is still dialed to eleven. The horse racing episodes are genuinely tense. If you liked Season 1, Season 2 is better in every way.

Binge-worthiness: 8/10. Great for couples watching together.

The Surprise Hit I Didn't See Coming 🍿

Elle (Prime Video) — 8/10

Look, I was skeptical. A Legally Blonde prequel about young Elle Woods? Sounded like a nostalgia cash-grab. I was wrong.

Lexi Minetree IS Elle Woods. The cast chemistry carries the entire show. June Diane Raphael brings the dry humor, Chandler Kinney is the unexpected scene-stealer, and James Van Der Beek makes the most of every scene he's in. It's warm, funny, and way smarter than it needs to be.

Already renewed for Season 2. Already deserved.

Binge-worthiness: 8/10. Binged in two days. Zero regrets.

Solid But Not Blowing My Mind 🛋️

Dutton Ranch (Paramount+) — 6.5/10

Yellowstone spinoff with Beth and Rip in South Texas. Ed Harris is doing great work and Annette Bening elevates everything she touches. But seven episodes in, it's still finding its identity. Is it a Yellowstone sequel? A new show wearing Yellowstone's clothes? I'm not sure the writers know yet.

It's fine. It's watchable. It's not appointment TV.

Binge-worthiness: 6/10. Background watching while you do something else.

Love Island USA Season 8 (Peacock) — 6/10

Ariana Madix is back and she's leaning into it. The villa looks incredible. But this cast hasn't found its central drama yet. Season 7 had 18.4 BILLION minutes viewed — that's an insane bar. Season 8 is entertaining enough but it needs a villain, a messy love triangle, something to break through the noise.

Five weeks in. I'm still watching. I'm not sure why.

Binge-worthiness: 5/10. It's reality TV — you either watch or you don't.

What Lost Me ❌

Sweet Magnolias Season 5 (Netflix)

I binged it. I enjoyed it. And then I immediately forgot about it. The NYC girls' trip was a fun change of scenery but the show has hit its ceiling. It's comfort food and that's fine, but it's not evolving. If you love it, you love it. I've made my peace with moving on.

Raising Kanan Season 5 (Starz)

The final season premiere set the table for something big. Four episodes in, we're still waiting for it to arrive. The Power universe has always been slow-burn but this final season needs to pick up the pace. I'm giving it two more episodes.

The Verdict

If you only have time for one show this month: The Vampire Lestat. No question. Sam Reid is giving a performance that's going to be in award conversations.

If you want a binge: ATLA S2 or Elle. Both are complete seasons you can knock out in a weekend.

If you need background noise: Dutton Ranch or Love Island. No judgment.

My streaming bill is out of control and my watchlist keeps growing. But honestly? Summer 2026 is delivering. More than I expected. We're eating well. 🍿
