The Gate Is Closed: Amazon Officially Axes Martin Gero’s Stargate Series
"Chevron seven is locked..."
For months, we’ve been staring at the event horizon, waiting for that shimmering blue portal to open and bring us back to the world of Stargates, Goa'uld, and the endless exploration of the galaxy. We had the coordinates. We had the hope. But as of today, the wormhole has collapsed.
Variety has exclusively reported that the new Stargate TV series from Martin Gero is not moving forward at Amazon. For those of us who have spent decades reciting gate addresses and debating the merits of the SG-1 vs. Atlantis vs. Universe era, this feels like an unscheduled offworld activation into a nightmare.
Martin Gero wasn't just some random showrunner plucked from a hat; he started his career within the original Stargate franchise. He understood the DNA of the series—the blend of military precision, archaeological wonder, and the sheer audacity of stepping through a ring of alien metal into the unknown. The prospect of having someone with that pedigree steering the revival was the first time in years that the hype felt grounded in actual franchise loyalty.
So, what happened? In the ruthless landscape of streaming wars, "not moving forward" is the corporate euphemism for a death sentence. Whether it was creative differences, budget concerns, or Amazon's shifting priorities, the result is the same: the gate remains dormant.
It’s a bitter pill to swallow, especially when we’ve seen other legacy sci-fi properties get the royal treatment. We’ve seen the Federation expand and the Galaxy far, far away get rebranded a dozen times. Stargate—the series that taught us that the universe is far more crowded and dangerous than we ever imagined—seems to be stuck in a temporal loop of "almost happening."
But if there’s one thing we know about Stargate, it’s that you never count out a team that can survive a trip to the edge of the galaxy and back. The IP is too potent, the fanbase is too passionate, and the lore is too rich to stay buried in a vault at MGM forever. Today is a day for mourning, for sure. We can all take a moment to say "Indeed" to the frustration of it all.
But we keep the dial set. We keep the eyes on the horizon. Because eventually, someone, somewhere, will find the right coordinates to bring the Stargate back to where it belongs: on our screens.
Until then, we’ll be re-watching the classics and dreaming of the day we can finally lock that seventh chevron for real.
Stay hopeful, Gate-nerds.
