It's funny how a simple line from a young Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine still captures the fundamental dream of this entire franchise. Flying away into the stars has always been at the heart of Star Wars, from Luke staring at the twin suns to Rey dreaming of a life beyond Jakku. Now, Lucasfilm has officially announced our next major cinematic jump into hyperspace: Star Wars: Starfighter.
Directed by Shawn Levy, Starfighter is officially locking in its theatrical release for May 28, 2027. But it's not just the release date that has my commlink buzzing—it's the details we finally got about the cast and the era.
The film stars Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Mia Goth, and Daniel Ings. Yes, you read that right. Ryan Gosling is officially entering a galaxy far, far away. According to the official synopsis, the film follows "a solitary pilot who becomes entangled in a crucial mission as new threats emerge" in a "rebuilding galaxy." And most importantly, their journey "may alter the future of the Force itself."
We also know the timeline: this is set five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. We are finally charting a course into the truly unknown. While The Mandalorian and Grogu (coming in 2026) is building out the New Republic era between the Original Trilogy and the Sequels, Starfighter is jumping forward. We're looking at a post-Exegol galaxy, trying to pick up the pieces, much like the galaxy had to rebuild after the Battle of Endor.
Shawn Levy brings a tremendous track record of blending humor, action, and heart, which feels perfectly aligned with the classic Star Wars tone. Pair that with a cast of this caliber, and Starfighter has the potential to be a massive reset for the theatrical side of the franchise. For years, we've thrived on the incredible world-building of the Disney+ era, exploring the spaces between the movies with shows like Andor and Ahsoka. But there's something uniquely magical about looking forward on the big screen.
The Force is shifting, and the future is starting to take shape. Let's hope this new pilot has what it takes to navigate a galaxy still healing from decades of war.
