This Week in Theaters & Streaming: March 31 – April 6, 2026

Mario blasts off to space, Maul gets his own Star Wars show, and Netflix drops a Belgian drama finale. Here's everything hitting screens this week — and whether it's worth your time.

Alright, let's get into it. This is a packed week — we've got a massive animated sequel storming theaters, a Star Wars animated series premiere, and a handful of streaming drops that deserve your attention. Here's your complete guide to what's new from March 31 through April 6.

The Big One: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 3 — Theaters)

Hype Level: 10/10

This is the week's headliner and it's not even close. The sequel to 2023's billion-dollar The Super Mario Bros. Movie takes Mario, Luigi, and the whole crew into outer space. Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Anya Taylor-Joy are all back, but the real news? Donald Glover voices Yoshi. Yeah, that Donald Glover. Brie Larson joins as Rosalina, Issa Rae plays Honey Queen, and Luis Guzman is the villain Wart.

The film is inspired by the beloved 2007 Wii game and follows Mario as he ventures beyond the Mushroom Kingdom into cosmic worlds and galactic challenges. If you grew up flinging Mario across planetoids in your living room, this one's going to hit different.

Where to watch: Theaters everywhere, including IMAX and RealD 3D. No streaming date yet — expect a Disney+ landing sometime mid-summer.

Also in Theaters This Week

The Stranger (April 3 — Limited)

Hype Level: 6/10

François Ozon adapts Albert Camus' existentialist classic, and he shot the whole thing in black-and-white. If you're into arthouse European cinema, this one's a must. For everyone else — it's Camus, so expect philosophical weight and gorgeous cinematography, not popcorn fun.

Still Playing: Hoppers & The Bride!

Pixar's Hoppers is still in its theatrical run after a March 6 opening. If you haven't caught it yet, this animal-lover-meets-tech story is worth the trip. Meanwhile, Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! — a Bonnie-and-Clyde spin on the Frankenstein story with Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale — is still hanging around in theaters if gothic romance is your thing.

Streaming Drops

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord (April 6 — Disney+)

Hype Level: 9/10

This is the streaming event of the week. Dave Filoni's new animated series follows Maul — voiced again by Sam Witwer — as he rebuilds his criminal empire in the shadows of the early Galactic Empire. Set about a year after The Clone Wars, the 10-episode series drops two episodes weekly through May 4th (yes, they planned that).

The premise: Maul crosses paths with a disillusioned Jedi Padawan who survived Order 66, and the question becomes whether she'll become his new dark apprentice. Richard Ayoade and Wagner Moura round out the voice cast. The animation style builds on The Clone Wars aesthetic but goes darker and more stylized. Star Wars fans, clear your Sunday evening.

Where to watch: Disney+, two episodes at premiere.

High Tides — Season 3, Final Season (April 3 — Netflix)

Hype Level: 5/10

The Belgian drama Knokke Off (marketed internationally as High Tides) wraps up its run with a third and final season. It's wealthy young people, messy relationships, and coastal secrets — think European Gossip Girl with sharper edges. Louise returns from a psychiatric institution to find everything's changed. If you binged the first two seasons, you already know if you're in.

Where to watch: Netflix, all episodes.

Dorohedoro — Season 2 (April 1 — Netflix)

Hype Level: 7/10

After six years of waiting, the wildly inventive anime Dorohedoro finally returns. Set in a grim world of sorcerers and a man with a reptile head trying to figure out who cursed him, this show is unlike anything else on Netflix. If you're an anime fan, you've probably been counting down the days.

Where to watch: Netflix.

On the Horizon (Coming Soon, Not This Week)

A few things to keep on your radar for the rest of April:

  • The Boys — Season 5, Final Season (April 8, Prime Video) — The superhero satire wraps up. Two episodes at premiere, then weekly through May 20.
  • Ready or Not 2 (April 10, Theaters) — Samara Weaving is back for round two.
  • Beef — Season 2 (April 16, Netflix) — Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan take over the anthology. Eight episodes.
  • Hacks — Season 5, Final Season (April 9, HBO/Max) — Jean Smart's Emmy magnet comes to a close.
  • Bugonia (April 26, Netflix) — Yorgos Lanthimos' Oscar-nominated dark comedy with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

The Verdict

This is a Mario week, plain and simple. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the kind of event release that fills theaters opening day, and if the first movie's $1.3 billion box office is any indicator, good luck getting a seat on Saturday.

But don't sleep on Maul – Shadow Lord hitting Disney+ on Sunday. It's the most exciting Star Wars project in a while, and the two-episodes-per-week format means you won't be waiting long for the story to build.

For the streamers among you, Dorohedoro Season 2 is the sleeper pick of the week. Trust me on this one.

See you next Monday. Keep watching.
