The Week of May 5 Has a Sequel Everyone's Been Waiting 20 Years For
The Devil Wears Prada 2 finally struts into theaters, Daredevil: Born Again wraps its second season with what might be Marvel's best TV finale yet, and Netflix drops a bestseller adaptation starring Sally Field and an octopus. Yeah, this week is stacked.
There are weeks where you're scanning every streaming app for something β anything β worth watching. And then there's the first week of May 2026, where the problem is the opposite: too much good stuff, not enough time.
Let's break it all down.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 β Theaters, May 1
Twenty years. That's how long we've waited for this, and honestly, I wasn't sure it would ever happen. But here we are: The Devil Wears Prada 2 hits theaters on May 1, and it's bringing the whole squad back.
Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly. Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs. Emily Blunt as Emily. Stanley Tucci as Nigel. David Frankel directing again. The premise picks up with Andy returning to Runway as Miranda fights to keep the magazine alive in the age of digital media. Emily is now running a luxury brand that might hold the key to Runway's survival.
If the teaser trailer numbers are anything to go by β 181.5 million views in 24 hours, the most-watched comedy trailer in 15 years β this thing is going to be massive. The new cast additions are no joke either: Kenneth Branagh, Lady Gaga, Lucy Liu, Pauline Chalamet, B.J. Novak. This is the kind of sequel that either soars or crashes spectacularly. I'm betting on the former.
If you haven't revisited the original recently, this week is your excuse.
Animal Farm β Theaters, May 1
George Orwell's 1945 novella gets a brand-new animated treatment from Andy Serkis, and it's not the bleak political allegory you might expect. This version takes a coming-of-age angle, introducing a new character β a piglet named Lucky β caught between the ideologies of Napoleon and Snowball.
The voice cast is ridiculous: Seth Rogen as Napoleon, Woody Harrelson as Boxer, Laverne Cox as Snowball, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Steve Buscemi, Jim Parsons. The film premiered at Annecy last year to warm reviews β not a masterpiece, but a solid, surprisingly family-friendly adaptation. Angel Studios is handling the theatrical release.
Daredevil: Born Again S2 Finale β Disney+, May 5
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 has been on a tear. A 95% on Rotten Tomatoes β up from the already-great 87% for Season 1. Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio have been delivering their best performances in years, and the addition of Krysten Ritter and Matthew Lillard has been perfect.
The season finale, "The Southern Cross," drops on Tuesday, May 5. If the showrunners stick the landing, this could be Marvel's strongest TV season to date. And if you need more Matt Murdock energy after it's over: The Punisher: One Last Kill β a Marvel Special Presentation β arrives the following week on May 12.
Season 3 is already filming. The MCU's street-level corner has never been stronger.
Remarkably Bright Creatures β Netflix, May 8
Shelby Van Pelt's debut novel spent over 64 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and now Remarkably Bright Creatures is getting the Netflix adaptation treatment. Sally Field stars as Tova, a widow working at a local aquarium who forms an unlikely bond with a giant Pacific octopus (voiced by Alfred Molina) and a wayward young man (Lewis Pullman) searching for his family.
Olivia Newman directs β she previously helmed Where the Crawdads Sing β so she knows her way around emotionally rich, nature-adjacent storytelling. PG-13 rating, 1 hour 51 minutes. This is going to be the cozy comfort watch of the month.
Also on Your Radar
Deep Water (Theaters, May 1) β Passengers on an LA-to-Shanghai flight crash-land in shark-infested waters. Ben Kingsley and Aaron Eckhart lead what looks like a solid survival thriller. Not reinventing the genre, but sometimes you just want sharks and tension.
The Furious (Theaters, May 8) β Shameik Moore stars as an ex-convict uncovering a small-town conspiracy involving a corrupt sheriff. Blair Underwood and The RZA co-star.
Looking further ahead: Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu lands on May 22 β the first Star Wars film in theaters since The Rise of Skywalker β and Mortal Kombat II follows on May 15. May 2026 is shaping up to be one of the best movie months in years.
The Takeaway
The first week of May is all about the sequel nobody thought we'd actually get. The Devil Wears Prada 2 is the clear headliner, but don't sleep on the Daredevil finale or that Netflix octopus movie. Whether you're heading to the theater or staying on the couch, this week has you covered.
See you next Monday with more.
