Stargate News: Joe Flanigan Drops a Major Hint About the Revival's Writers' Room
The new Amazon MGM Stargate series is heating up, and Atlantis star Joe Flanigan just gave us our best update yet on what's happening behind the scenes.
Chevron seven is locked, folks—we have an unscheduled offworld activation from none other than Colonel John Sheppard himself.
Ever since Amazon MGM officially greenlit the new Stargate series back in late 2025 with franchise veteran Martin Gero at the helm, information has been trickling in slower than a dial-up connection to Destiny. But recently, Joe Flanigan, who anchored Stargate Atlantis for five spectacular seasons, pulled back the curtain just a tiny bit on the new project.
According to recent reports, Flanigan revealed he’s been paying close attention to the new creative team and shared some extremely promising updates about the writers' room. While he didn't confirm if Sheppard will be flying Puddle Jumpers anytime soon, his enthusiasm for the direction the new series is taking is exactly what the fanbase needed to hear.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
When Amazon acquired MGM, there was a genuine fear that they might completely reboot the franchise—wiping out 17 seasons of television and starting from scratch. That's exactly what original creator Roland Emmerich wanted to do before he recently abandoned the idea and stepped away from the franchise entirely. But fans didn't want a shiny, disconnected reimagining; we wanted the universe we spent decades exploring.
Having legacy actors like Flanigan not only aware of but speaking positively about the ongoing writers' room process suggests that Martin Gero is doing exactly what he promised: building a bold new chapter that honors the existing mythology. It’s the perfect bridge between the old and the new.
It feels like the right people are in the room. Writers who understand the difference between a DHD and a GDO. Writers who know why the humor of SG-1, the adventure of Atlantis, and the ambition of Universe all made this franchise legendary.
Are we going to see Sheppard, McKay, or Carter pop through the event horizon in the pilot? Too early to tell. But hearing that the legacy cast is clued in gives me hope that the SGC is in good hands.
Indeed.
We’ll keep our ears to the subspace comms for any further updates.
